Why oats are good for you

Like all whole grain foods, oats contain fibre, vitamins, minerals, antioxidents and phytonutrients, but oats are probably best known as a source of soluble fibre (see below).

They also contain a host of nutrients such as B vitamins (Thiamin, Riboflavin and Niacin) along with Vitamin E, calcium, iron, magnesium and zinc. More information on whole grain

Oats & cholesterol reduction

The inclusion of oats as part of a diet low in saturated fat and a healthy lifestyle can help reduce cholesterol*. This is because oats are a good source of beta glucans, a soluble fibre that can actually help to lower cholesterol levels.

Kingsmill Oatilicious® has 0.9g of beta glucan in 3 slices - that's 30% of the suggested daily intake. In addition to your Kingsmill Oatilicious®, to get the recommended 3g of beta glucan a day, you could also have a bowl of porridge or muesli, and try adding oats to some of your favourite dishes.

For example you can use oats to make a savoury coating for fish or chicken or as a crumble topping.

Saturated fats can cause your cholesterol levels to rise so choose your spread and fillings with care. Foods like cheese, butter, red meat, processed meats and pork are all high in saturated fats so should be eaten in moderation.

High cholesterol levels can increase your chances of developing heart disease, so if you have any questions or concerns then contact your doctor to discuss them in more detail.
